The National Archives Confirms the Continuation of its Role in Preserving the Memory of the Nation and Keeping Pace with the Development in the 50 Years
In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, to declare 2021 “Year of the 50th “ , in celebration of the UAE’s golden anniversary, the National Archives confirms that preserving the history of the United Arab Emirates has always been its top priority throughout the past years. Thanks to the wise leadership's support, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, the National Archives has always been the trusted keeper of the Memory of the Nation and the preserver of historical records since its establishment in 1968 upon the directives of the Founder and Builder Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
On this occasion, His Excellency Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Midfa, Secretary General of the Federal Supreme Council Affairs and Chairman of the National Archives’ Board of Directors, said: “As we receive the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, to declare this year the UAE’s “Year of the 50th ”, we promise our wise leadership to keep on the national track to create a brighter future for generations to come. We will continue to preserve the legacy of the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his fellow founding fathers and to document the legacy of our great leaders who pursued the course of development, prosperity and advancement of the UAE people.”
He added that as the National Archives plans for the next 50 years, it will take confident steps towards ensuring a better future for the coming generations by preserving the memory of their nation, which is full of impressive achievements. Moreover, it will exert great efforts to realize the visions of the wise leadership and the comprehensive development process. In this regard, the National Archives’ officials and all its staff members are committed to give special prominence to the values and achievements of the past which the National Archives is proud to preserve in its archives and to make them accessible to the UAE people to be proud of their glorious history. We rest assured that the nation’s youth are responsible and that they will present their creative ideas and innovative conceptions which anticipate the future in order to support national achievements and enhance progress and prosperity.”
On this occasion, His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Mohammed Alraisi, Director General of the National Archives said: “The important details of the speech of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, shed light on the road map to the UAE’s centennial anniversary. We, at the National Archives, will continue to work towards setting up the National Archives’ strategy in the next 50 years in light of our wise leadership’s directives and on the basis of anticipating the future and the required innovative strategic plans and ambitious national projects which guarantee the continuity of its excellence alongside major archives across the world.”
He added: “The UAE witnessed phenomenal growth, development and prosperity in a record time. It has attained an unparalleled success in achieving higher rates in various development areas, which makes us hopeful, optimistic and more determined to diligently keep on track. We, with a solid will, shall reach the UAE’s centennial anniversary with more development and advancement in archival work and at all levels and various fields by following our wise leadership whose ambition enabled us to make it to space while paving the way to the future.”
His Excellency Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Executive Director of the National Archives, affirmed that the National Archives attaches special attention to preserving the Memory of the Nation and to document and archive it in the second half of this century in accordance with the best standards and International practices. The National Archives is keen to remain current with the advanced technologies and to showcase our history of which we are proud to the world as an exemplary national experience. We will work to develop clear plans and mechanisms that enable future generations to carry on this national role enhancing it with our leadership’s comprehensive vision, which paves the way for the development and welfare of the UAE, humanity and the world.
He added that the National Archives will certainly keep on fulfilling its national upbringing role, its societal responsibilities and its national mission with complete confidence in documenting the UAE’s glorious past and recording the prosperous present on the road towards the future ensuring more progress and prosperity for the UAE.”
He pointed out that as the National Archives prepares its strategic plan for the next 50 years, it will launch a number of initiatives such as setting up a scientific research laboratory to embrace innovations in the field of archiving, establishing an archive training and development center and developing programs to help government agencies to manage electronic documents.
His Excellency said that at the beginning of this year, an invitation to provide creative ideas on shaping the future of archiving and preserving history over the next 50 years was extended via social media platforms to everyone whether inside or outside the National Archives.
The National Archives has shown great interest in designing the future of archives in most of its events. It held a dialogue session entitled: “The Future of Archives After Covid-19”, attended by heads of major archives worldwide, and discussed the future performance of archives in preserving the history and heritage for the generations to come. It also emphasized the importance of preserving historical files and documents, digital documentation of decision-making authorities, the importance of expanding the circle of remote communication, creating a new model for constructive communication via the internet, enhancing the role of archives in research and creativity and providing important information for future generations.
The National Archives also emphasized, in the session, the importance of preserving historical documents, training on the use of technology and carrying on the process of digitizing traditional documents. The session highlighted the significance of ‘collective memory’, the importance of the present for the generations looking forward to future horizons, and the worth of transforming the present phase into an opportunity to collect more information from which the coming generations will benefit. Furthermore, the National Archives explained the importance of the Arabian Gulf Digital Archive, which contains thousands of historical documents accessible online to everyone for free. Indeed, it is one of the most important archive websites from which a large number of researchers currently benefit. This project came as a result of the National Archives' interest in anticipating the future and its events.
The interest of the National Archives in designing the future of the archiving sector and preserving history was embodied in its focus on engaging in the work of libraries, strengthening its role in preserving and making government records accessible to decision-makers and researchers, assigning roles and archiving tasks across the Emirates, paying attention to digital transformation in document preservation and accessibility and introducing artificial intelligence in indexing and search.
