The National Archives and “the Ministry of Education” adopt “Tolerance” as a slogan for the Young Historian Award
The National Archives in its pursuit to implement the strategy of the wise leadership that declared the year 2019 as the Year of Tolerance - adopted “Tolerance” as the slogan for the Tenth edition of the Young Historian Award for the current academic year 2018-2019. The National Archives, in the course of organizing the award in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, called for introductory meetings on the Award in its new edition in January 2019.
The National Archives aims through organizing the Young Historian Award in its Tenth edition, to promote and reinforce certain values among students, namely: the sense of belonging to the homeland, loyalty to its wise leadership, national identity, historical awareness, thinking, expression and innovation in the field of historical research. The Award seeks to encourage them to take interest in the UAE heritage, its ancient history which is a source of pride, and conducting research in the history of humanity in general.
The National Archives chose “Tolerance” as the slogan for its Tenth edition of the Young Historian Award in line with the strategy of the UAE wise leadership, declaring 2019 as the Year of Tolerance stemming from its interest in tolerance as a noble moral value of great cultural importance to the society, as Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan has laid its foundation in the UAE community as he established the UAE as a haven of tolerance and an Role model to be followed in applying the values of tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Consequently, the National Archives seeks to reinforce this moral value among in students and future generations.
The significance of this slogan stems from the fact that the UAE became an inspiring example of tolerance and coexistence under its wise leadership since it accommodates more than 200 nationalities living peacefully together; embodying the true meaning of tolerance, positive interaction peaceful coexistence with others. Therefore, the National Archives focuses on instilling this sublime moral value in the minds and hearts of school students.
The National Archives' interest in the Young Historian Award comes as part of its carrying out the great role and responsibility it undertook to effectively contribute in preserving the UAE history and heritage and in the national upbringing of its generations. Thus it seeks to educate students and encourage them to acquaint themselves with the history and heritage of their homeland and to preserve their national identity.
The Young Historian Award aims at promoting the values of belonging, loyalty and national identity and encouraging research in UAE history. The award seeks to make the students and future generations active partners in preserving the history and heritage of the UAE and in making them accessible to the public, since the memory of the nation is their responsibility thus the NA calls upon students to take interest in this memory, show pride in the history and heritage of their fathers and ancestors, through which they will raise their awareness of their nation's history, heritage, achievements, culture and civilization. This also acquaints students with and directs them to adopt the approach and line of thinking of the founding leader Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, that is considered an everlasting source of inspiration through the nation's march and journey. Sheikh Zayed left us a magnificent heritage and legacy of openness and tolerance calling for open-dialogue between various peoples and rejection of fanaticism, intolerance and violence.
The National Archives calls on students, “the youth of the future” to participate in the Young Historian Award for the scientific benefit they will attain from such experience in scientific research in the UAE history and the biographies of its great leaders, and it urges their family members and schools to encourage them in that course.
Its noteworthy that the Tenth edition of the Young Historian Award is addressing the UAE students of cycle two and three of public and private schools and its themes are:- year of tolerance, Sheikh Zayed's centennial birth anniversary, martyrs of duty, role of Emirati women, studies in genealogy, tribes and personalities, oral narratives, poetry, folk-arts, sayings, memories, correspondence, handicrafts, historical and archeological sites, traditional architecture, maritime life, traditional medicine, the UAE civilization and the its establishment dating back half a century.
The Committee of the Young Historian Award laid down the terms and conditions for accepting written research papers and oral interviews, for participation mechanism, terms for accepting the works submitted for the award and remunerative financial prizes. The committee has also specified the criteria of the award as the theme shall be distinguished and characterized by its simplicity, style, and diversity of documented sources, as well as by its clear work plan, the accuracy of the research historical facts and the adherence of schools to the time-schedule in presenting their students' research papers to the Award Committee.
The committee has also specified the time-plan for the Tenth edition of The Young Historian award; so that its announcement shall be in January 2019, the receipt of research papers at the end of March, whereas the evaluation decision and honoring of wining participants in April.
It is noteworthy that the categories of the Young Historian Award which the National Archives launched in 2009 are:- oral history in which participants are required to record oral history and carry out studies on genealogy and UAE prominent figures, and geographical history in which participants are required to carry out research on the history and geography of the UAE as in historical monuments and landmarks, prominent figures and archaeological sites, and economic history in which participants are required to conduct research and interviews on the UAE professions and handicrafts, traditional industries, and the last category is social history, in which participants are required to conduct research on social life in the ancient and modern UAE.
