The National Library and Archives Attracts Translation Luminaries to the Second Edition of the International Translation Conference

Organizing the second edition of the International Translation Conference virtually from 9-13 May 2022, the National Library and Archives draws leading academics, specialists, experts and researchers in all branches of translation from 25 countries. It ensures that the participants in the conference are familiar with the history, heritage and present of the UAE, so that their research papers reflect the well-deserved image of the UAE. The conference is held under the slogan "Translation and Preservation of the Memory of the Nation, The Image of the UAE in Cultures, Literatures and World Intellectual Heritage”.
The 2nd International Translation Conference is proud of its rich track record with many illustrious names in the global field of translation. Interested scholars and researchers in all branches of translation studies are looking forward to the wealth of information introduced by senior experts, specialists and university professors who are participating in the conference.
Elite translation specialists from around the world will participate in this conference, including Professor Wael Hassan from the University of Illinois in the United States. He is the president of the American Comparative Literature Association and a specialist in modern Arabic and Arab Diaspora literature and intellectual history. Prof. Hassan is the author of “Tayeb Salih: Ideology and the Craft of Fiction” and “Immigrant Narratives: Orientalism and Cultural Translation in Arab American and Arab British Literature”. He has translated Abdelfattah Kilito’s “Thou Shalt Not Speak My Language” from Arabic into English and Alberto Mussa’s “Lughz Al-qāf”.
Some of the luminaries who are participating in the conference are Prof. Tarek Shamma from Binghamton University in New York. He is the author of “Translation and the Manipulation of Difference: Arabic Literature in Nineteenth Century”, Professor Abderrahman Beggar from Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, and Professor Barbara Michalak- Pikulska, Chair of the Arabic Department, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow in Poland. She is the author of “Tradition and Innovation in the Works of Layla Al-Uthman”, “The Contemporary Kuwaiti Short Story in Peace Time and War”, “Selected Problems and Source Readings, Modern Poetry and Prose of Oman”, “Modern Poetry and Prose of Bahrain”, and “Intertextuality in Modern Arabic Literature”
The keynote speech titled “Journey into the Memory of the Emirates in Many Languages: The National Poetry of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum between History and Legend” is delivered by Prof. Saddik Gohar, a translation expert at  the National Library and Archives, and a critic who is the author of several books, namely “The Rebellion of Language and the Restoration of Voice: Navigating the Poetic World of Habib Al-Sayegh”, “The Lover of Rhymes: Critical Approach to the Poetry of Salha Ghabesh” and “Antelope Day Between Heritage and Mythology: Narratives in the Stories of Fatima Hamad Al Mazrouei”. He also translated several books including “The Three Cultures”, “Islamic Textiles” and “Arab Dress”.
It is noteworthy that significant research papers were presented in the conference such as “Translating UAE Cultural History” by Dr. Adrian De Man from the UAE University, “Translating Indian Literary Works on the Cultural and Social History of the Emirates into Arabic: Possibilities and Problems” by  Dr. Suhaib Alam from India, “Audiovisual Translation and its Role in Enhancing the Image of the UAE and its Cultural Heritage in the 21st Century: Applied Models for Subtitling Documentaries about the UAE from Arabic to Hebrew” by Ahmed Ashraf Abdel-Aty, “The Israeli Vision of the Emirati Experience: An Analytical Study of the Articles of "Moran Zaga" by Mr. Walid Mostafa Morsi, “Translating Zayed, Man Who Built a Nation into Albanian Language and its Role in Enhancing the Image of the UAE and its Cultural Heritage in the Balkans” by Professor Ramiz Mustafa Zakai from Albania, “Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger and his Translation of the Emirati Bedouin Heritage in the Mid-Twentieth Century” by Professor Yahya Mohamed Mahmoud Ahmed from the UAE University, “The Image of the UAE in the Eyes of European travelers” by Dr. Ahmed Ibish from Syria, and “Cultural Differences and their Impact on the Translation Process: An Approach to the Translation of "Zayed from Challenge to Union" from Arabic into Hebrew” by Dr. Nahla Raheel from Egypt.
