يحظى الارشيف والمكتبة الوطنية بعضوية عدة مؤسسات دولية أهمها: المجلس الدولي للأرشيف منذ عام (1975)، والفرع الإقليمي العربي للمجلس الدولي للأرشيف «عربيكا» منذ عام ( 1975)، والأمانة العامة لمراكز الوثائق والدراسات في دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي، وحصل على شهادة تقدير من منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والثقافة والعلوم «اليونسكو» باعتباره المؤسسة الأولى في العالم العربي التي توثّق الأحداث والوقائع مرتبةً ومنظمةً، وتصدرها تباعاً.
واستطاع الارشيف والمكتبة الوطنية في سعيه لجمع الوثائق وأرشفتها وحفظها وفق أساليب علمية أن يحظى أيضاً بعضوية اتحاد المؤرخين العرب، وجمعية التاريخ والآثار بدول مجلس التعاون الخليجي، وجمعية دراسات الخليج وشبه الجزيرة العربية، وجمعية المؤرخين المغاربة، والجمعية المصرية للدراسات التاريخية، وجمعية المؤرخين والآثاريين العراقيين، وجمعية التاريخ الشفاهي الأمريكية. وقد انتُخب سعادة الدكتور عبدالله الريس مدير عام الأرشيف اوالمكتبة الوطنيةرئيساً لبرنامج ((ذاكرة العالم)) التابعة لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والثقافة والعلوم (( اليونسكو)).
جاء ذلك الانتخاب بناء على مساهمات الدكتور عبدالله الريس وإنجازاته على الصعيدين العربي والعالمي في مجال حفظ الأرشيفات من الكوارث، وقد فاز بالعديد من الجوائز العالمية التي أشادت بدوره في جمع الذاكرة الوطنية للدولة، وإسهاماته في المجال نفسه عالميًّا. ومما عزز هذا الاختيار المكانة العالمية التي بلغها الأرشيف والمكتبة الوطنية، والعلاقات المتينة مع المنظمات الدولية المعنية بشؤون الأرشفة والتوثيق.

The National Archives, previously known as the National Center for Documentation and Research (NCDR), was established in 1968, upon directives from the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, under the name of "Documents and Research Bureau", and was affiliated with Al Diwan Al Amiri (Ruler’s Court). Its mission was defined as ‘collecting documents and information relating to the history, politics, social life and culture of the gulf region and Arabian Peninsula in general, and in particular those related to Abu Dhabi and the Emirates, from primary sources in Arab and foreign countries. It has been entrusted with the documentation and translation of these documents. In 1972, its name was changed to the Center for Documentation & Research (CDR), then according to the Federal Decree No. (7) for 2008, it became the National Center for Documentation and Research (NCDR) and according to the Federal Decree No. (1) for 2014 the name was changed to the National Archives.Documents and Research Bureau was changed to Center for Documentation and Research
